From the film Apocalypse Now – a quote by Kurtz, but functions as a theme statement embedded in the dialogue:

Context: Writing to his son (Willard reading letter from the dossier) explaining his perspective having assassinated three men and one woman – enemies who attacked their compound.

” In war, there are many moments for compassion and tender action.  There are many moments for ruthless action – what is called ruthless – what may, in many circumstances be only clarity, seeing clearly what there is to be done and doing it, directly, quickly, awake, looking at it.”

– further to this he says, “I am beyond their timid, lying morality.”
